Behold, the ripening of another world.

Three Skies is a free to play, turn based fantasy RPG with dungeon exploration inspired by Darkest Dungeon and a combat system inspired by Pokémon. It’s also, foremost, a labor of love by Shiny Box and their development team.

I had the privilege of being contacted to work on on this project, with the goal being to build a foundation for the world, its characters, and its systems to thrive. To make a world that can breathe and grow, and to approach crafting a story that wasn’t the standard, vapid type that permeates most F2P titles.

To that end, I started from the ground up, building a world filled with secrets that will be uncovered over time as the story progresses and lead the player down paths they likely won’t expect. My hope was to make something intriguing that the players would want to enjoy, not merely skip through for the sake of faster progress. Not the easiest task with these sorts of games, but I shot my shot.

So here, instead of trying to sell you the game through mechanics and the core game loop, I figure I’ll dive a little into what makes the world tick and what you, as a central figure in that world, can expect to find.


The continent of Baranor is still recovering from an extended period of expansionist warfare undertaken by the Mourland Empire. This generational war, known colloquially as The Expanse, left the remaining sovereign nations with little room to grow. Left to lick their wounds, some have accepted their new status quo. Others, naturally, have sought ways to bring Mourland down.

The world itself is filled with powerful beings. Most use that power of their own right – soldiers, sorcerers, craftsmen – but there are those who have been blessed with the ability to instill power in others. Whether they are controlling and empowering beasts or bolstering the natural aspects of those around them, these men and women have the ability to shape their surroundings.

You are a follower of one such woman. Both renowned and secretive, she has chosen you and your fellow companion to be her sole helpers. Together, you have worked to right wrongs and establish footholds all across the southeastern end of Baranor.

Until the Calamity occurs.

Trapped near the epicenter and split apart from your friends, your world is abruptly thrown into chaos. From there, you must gather your wits and learn what has changed – both in the world and in you. Neither of which will ever be the same.
